Pedestrian traffic injury facts

In 2008, over 4,300 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the United States.

On average, a pedestrian is killed by an automobile crash every 120 minutes.

A pedestrian is injured in a traffic crash once every eight minutes. 

There were 69,000 pedestrians injured in traffic accidents in 2008. 

The nearly 4,300 deaths of pedestrians from traffic crashes is a significant decline from the 5,228 deaths that occurred a decade earlier, in 1998.

Pedestrian deaths and injuries are more likely to occur in urban areas that rural;  at non intersections; and at night. 

An overwhelming number of the pedestrians killed or injured in traffic accidents were males, nearly 70%.

Finally, nearly 50% of all pedestrian traffic deaths occurred on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
