Star of India Volunteer Dies after falling from Ship's Mast

A tragedy struck the landmark ship the Star of India on Sunday.  A volunteer crew member who was working on the ship fell about 40 feet and died, as reported by News8 San Diego.  Reports say that volunteer Greg Gushaw was up in the sails of the ship when he fell and hit his head on the ship, and landed in the water.  Other crew members got Gushaw out of the water and commenced CPR, without success.  He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.  Gushaw was reportedly wearing a safety harness, so it is unclear how or why he fell.  Harbor Police are investigating.

Gushaw was a retired Navy Intelligence Officer who was a volunteer crew member for the ship.  He was 68 years old.
